It’s back to the ’90s! The streamlined silhouette has been making its appearance throughout 2022, and autumn is no exception. In a contrast to fashion ten years ago, which emphasized lots of accessories, this autumn emphasizes simple, minimalistic clothing layers.
I am both here for it and hate it. This post reveals ten upcoming trends for Fall/Winter 2022 (and where you might shop them), and my personal opinion of each. Regardless of whatever my opinion is, though, you should still do you!
1. Skirts, Skirts, Skirts
Skirts are in, and it is my favourite thing! Whatever your style is, Fall/Winter 2022 has it prepped for you. Maxi- and midi-skirts continue to be a favourite everywhere, but there’s a different story for mini-skirts. Itsy-bitsy mini-skirts are bubbling up in England while American mini-skirts are getting longer. Personally, I’ll be taking part in the American version.
(It’s worth mentioning that America also has a version of the uber-short skirts: They’re being called “micro-” or “nano-” skirts. Mini-skirts are being separated into their own category.)
2. Leather
Like every Fall/Winter season, leather is back for its spotlight. Both faux and real leathers are on-trend this season, so head over to your local T.J. or T.K. Maxx and pick up your leather goods for cheap! Or invest in a long-term leather piece, because I think Hell’s freeze over before leather stops being a staple.
3. Flared & Loose Pants
Looser fits in pants, trousers, and jeans are still in full-steam ahead, however, flared cuts are coming back! We saw the return of the bell-bottom last year, and the next best thing is here this year. These were always my favourite cut, so I am loving this for boot season!
Cargo pants also fall into this category. Cargoes are having a split opinion in the fashion world. Some experts are saying they’re on their way out; some are saying they’re only going to get bigger. Time will tell. For now, if this is your style, you cannot go wrong with it.
4. Chunky Loafers & Strappy Sandals
The chunky footwear is not going anywhere any time soon, and the relaxed ’90s fit of the loafers are hopping on that train. Chunky loafers are the new thing even if I won’t be joining.
Strappy sandals, however, I swear, will never go away and are a STAPLE. There’s always a small remix to them every, and if you are someone who prides themselves on being perfectly on-trend, then you’ll have to turn to your trusty designers. To the rest of us, strappy sandals are strappy sandals, and they will always have a place in my wardrobe.
5. Lingerie & Sheer Fabrics
While these fabrics joined the bodysuit movement last year, they’re becoming much their own entity. I love lace-y garments as much as the next girl, but I’m having trouble joining in on wearing lingerie as daywear.
Unless you’ve mastered the art of stashing hand-warmers inside your bra and underwear, I vote this remain a warm autumn trend (and we let it die in the winter). While I might not wear something truly sexy out in public, I’ve always been a fan of sheer fabrics, particularly those that are mostly translucent or peek-a-boos. A sheer crop-top over a bralette can be adorable, especially if you live somewhere that is slow to shake off the summer heat.
6. Metallics & Glitter
Following the clubby vibe, metallics and glitter are alive and well. Which is excellent news for my newly-awakened inner social butterfly. I was never a glitter girl until college, but I do love me some metallics. And for them to come out as normal clothes–MMM! I am here for it.
7. Bright Colours
Not to be confused with jewel or neon tones, bright colours are coming out in spades. I see this more in English clothing, but I do hope it makes its way across the pond.
8. Browns, Caramels, & Creams
This is the American palette this autumn. Do not get me wrong! I’m loving the warm, earth tones for autumn. It simplifies the struggle of making outfits match, but I’ll be throwing in some colour, too.
9. Vest Tops
The clean-cut vest tops are hanging on strong. I never got to experiment with them last year, so I’m glad to have the chance this year. The traditional sweater vest from last year is such a cozy item for your wardrobe, but the vest top has expanded this year. “Vest top” refers to the cut, not one specific item. I will still be getting myself a sweater vest for Fall/Winter, but these other styles are growing on me, too.
10. Sporty & Athletic
While this is not my cup of tea, I know this club is in short supply of members. Most of my generation loves the loungewear, sporty style. Thankfully, for all of you, those trends are not going anywhere. Athletic wear is still as comfy as ever, and the market is expanding every day.
In Conclusion…
Whatever your style is, own it, regardless of what the trends are. If you prefer to wear 1950s dresses or your yoga pants all day every day, wear it. What you love is what you feel most confident in. And what you feel most confident in is always what will look the best.
